PROTON (short for automotif Sdn Bhd) which was established on May 7, 1983 with paid-up capital of 150 million dollars, is the first Malaysian car manufacturer. Its establishment was the idea of Dr. Mahathir bin Mohamad, Prime Minister of the time, to achieve the national aspirations towards industrialization. This arduous task is supported by the Heavy Industry Corporation of Malaysia Berhad (HICOM), and joint venture partners from overseas.
Shareholders consisting of:

* Mitsubishi Motors Corporation, Japan (15%)
* Mitsubishi Corporation, Japan (15%)
PROTON factory is located at:
* HICOM Industrial Estate, Batu Tiga, 40000 Shah Alam, Selangor.
* Tanjung Malim, Perak
